Project Design and Implementation

RTMI participated in the design of ADB funded (over $100 million) urban primary health care project involving NGOs and local government institutions and the design team was led by the President of RTMI. Since 2007, RTMI is implementing health and education programs for Myanmar refugees in the UNHCR camps at Cox’s Bazar. A large community outreach program with satellite clinics, door to door advocacy and counseling services are made available for the target population. For sustainability of interventions, youths and adolescents and community members were involved in the process: more than 100 YAVs were trained, 24 Community Trained Birth Attendants were developed and 34 peer educators in HIV/AIDS positioned. Special component on support to Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) is also extended under the program. During 2008-11 RTMI run Education Program in the two camps with funding support from UNICEF. The objectives of the program were (i) to impart center-based Early Childhood Education (Play group and pre-school) to 90 percent of the children aged 4-6 years. (ii) to impart primary education to 90 percent of children aged 6-10 years and (iii) to assist 75 percent of the families having children under 3 years in practicing age-appropriate interactive care at home. The program is being run with 7553 children and 108 teachers through 18 schools. RTMI has organized basic trainings for the pre-primary and non-formal primary education teachers.
